چکیده

We present an X-ray observation of the active giant β Cet, performedwith the LowEnergy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) on-board the SAX satellite. The resulting X-ray spectrum is well fit by an optically-thin plasma model with two discrete temperatures, and the inferred coronal metallicity is compatible both with the abundances derived from a re-analysis of the ASCA SIS spectrum of the same object, adopting the same plasma emission code (mekal), and with accurate photospheric abundances recently reported in the literature. The remarkable similarity between the X-ray spectrum of β Cet and the one of the active binary Capella, also observed by SAX, rises again the issue of how some putative He-burning clump giants, like β Cet, manage to retain (or regain) a relatively high X-ray activity level. Some implications of the new Hipparcos parallaxes, relevant for the coronal properties of β Cet and the Hyades giants, are also discussed.

A SAX / LECS X - ray observation of the active binary Capella

We present a SAX/LECS X-ray observation of the active binary Capella, the first coronal source observed in the SAX Guest Investigator program. The analysis of this observation, performed using the mekal plasma emission code, shows that the LECS spectrum is well fit by a two-component optically-thin plasma model. A differential emission measure (DEM) obtained by direct inversion of the X-ray spe...

Simulating the Source Parameter Recovery Capability from Coronal X-ray Spectra: the Sax/lecs and the Asca/sis Cases

We have studied the performance of global 2 tting applied to low-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, focusing on the retrieval of source parameters , with emphasis on the coronal metallicity. The study has been conducted by tting large numbers of simulated spectra with known characteristics , and studying the distribution of the best-t parameters, using the responses of the LECS detector onboard the...

X–ray emission from the giant molecular clouds in the Galactic Center region and the discovery of new X–ray sources

We report the results of X–ray (2–10 keV) observations of the giant molecular clouds Sgr B, Sgr C and Sgr D in the Galactic Center region, together with the discovery of the point-like source SAX J1748.2–2808. The data have been obtained with the MECS instrument on the BeppoSAX satellite. The core of Sgr B2 has an X–ray luminosity of ∼6×10 erg s and its spectrum is characterized by a strong Fe ...

Letter to the Editor BeppoSAX LECS/MECS X-ray spectroscopy of the young supernova remnant N132D

We have analyzed an observation of the supernova remnant N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud, performed with the Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) and theMediumEnergyConcentrator Spectrometer (MECS) instruments on board the X-ray satellite BeppoSAX. Thanks to the good sensitivity of the LECS/MECScombination over the range 0.3–8.5 keVwewere able to detect the presence of an additional ...
